Italian heirloom from the Calabria region since at least the 1880's.  
This is my favorite broccoli to grow, simply because it keeps on producing side shoots long after you harvest the main floret.  So much more practical than varieties where you harvest once and are left with a big broccoli stump.  To encourage more side shoots after harvesting the main head, gently push the plant over onto its side, leaving the roots in the ground.
