Solanum lycopersicum
First introduced by Landreth Seeds in 1885, the Pink Peach Tomato in an heirloom worth growing just for its incredible beauty (though it tastes good too!)
Smallish three-inch fruits have a glowing, translucent matte skin, dappled with pink and gold, and looking very much like their peach namesake. The flavor is mild and sweet, with a soft floral fruitiness.
Landreth Seed Company opened in 1784 in Philadelphia, and boasted such clients as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Tomatoes, however, were disdained by most Americans until the late 1800's, until which time they were considered 'disgusting and poisonous'. Thank goodness things have changed and this beauty was preserved!
Easily hollowed out for stuffing, as the seeds are held up high.
