General
We do not have an organic certification provided by an outside agency. To be certified organic is expensive, time-consuming, and increasingly meaningless, as many certified organic products have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals and pesticides. Our seeds are grown on a small farm in healthy soil with only organic fertilizers such as composted manure from our sheep and chickens. No herbicides or pesticides are ever used on our crops.
The simplest definition of an heirloom variety is that the seeds are open-pollinated. This means that unlike hybrids, you can save the seeds and they will grow into the same exact variety if you plant them the following season (unless you grew two varieties of the same species together and they cross-pollinated). Beyond just being open-pollinated, heirlooms usually have a rich history of being grown for generations, and are known for their special attributes such as extraordinary flavor, ability to grow in harsh conditions, or contribution to a regional cuisine.
All of our seeds are carefully tested for germination before they ever leave our farm. If seeds you received from us didn't germinate as expected, it may be due to one of the following possibilities: -The soil was over watered or too dry -The soil temperature was too hot or too cold -Seeds were purchased in previous years and were stored improperly or have expired -The soil that seeds were planted in was contaminated with a fungus or bacteria that caused the seeds to rot before germinating -The soil that the seeds were planted in was contaminated with an herbicide or other chemicalIf you need more guidance, please feel free to send us a message
