Zea mays
Gaspe Flint Corn is an ancestral corn of the Mi'kmaq people of the Gaspe Peninsula and Canadian/Maine Maritimes. It was documented by explorer Jaques Cartier during his 1534 expedition, but was of course being grown long before then. Well adapted to cold northern climes and short growing seasons, this corn ripens in only 45-60 days. Plants grow to just 30 inches tall, and produce 4-6-inch-long cobs with 8 rows of kernels.
Dried kernels can be ground into cornmeal or flour, or soaked and cooked in soups or stews, as was traditional. Small stalks are easily grown in containers or raised beds.
