Zea mays

Stowell's Evergreen Corn is considered by many to be one of the very best sweet corns for eating fresh, canning, or freezing. Dating back to 1848, when it was bred by Nathaniel Newman Stowell, who had worked for decades to realize his sweetcorn dreams. There is a story that says Nathaniel sold a couple of ears to a friend with the agreement that it was for personal use only, but the friend sold the seeds to a seed company for quite a bit of money. The name 'Evergreen' comes from the fact that is matures very slowly, remaining in the tender milk stage for a long period of time. If you love fresh sweet corn, but bemoan the tiny window of time it can be picked fresh from the garden, then this corn is for you! Unlike modern hybrid sweet corns where the taste is just 'sweet', heirloom sweet corns have a complex flavor profile that pairs deliciously with plenty of butter! It is said that whole stalks were pulled and hung upside down in a cool room, where the corn lasted well into winter.

Ears are 7-8 inches with very white kernels.
