Solanum lycopersicum

Behold the Penjar Songil tomato of Spain! (Also called Son Gil Longkeeper). The word 'penjar' means 'to hang' in Catalan, and that is exactly how these tomatoes were traditionally stored. This Catalonian heirloom has long been found hanging from kitchen ceiling beams, where they last for over six months, while slowly drying and concentrating their flavor. Tomatoes are often cut in half and rubbed directly on a slice of rustic bread (yum!).

Fruits are about 3-4 inches across and have a thick skin, which allows them to store so well. Color is pinkish-orange with yellow shoulders and a rather matte skin. Heavy producers.
