Cucurbita pepo
Minimum seed count: 20
When I think of pumpkin pie in the Fall in New England, I think of this diminutive but mighty pumpkin. Smaller and far more flavorful than the larger Jack-O-Lantern types, these little guys are known as Small Sugar Pumpkins for a reason; their sweet, smooth, and string-less flesh makes a mighty tasty pie! While this variety was first sold be seed companies in 1863, its history stretches back much farther, as it was selected over time from pumpkins grown by the Indigenous people of the North East.
In good years weather-wise, these pumpkins can be hugely productive. In cold summers when the pumpkins are fully grown but still green at frost-time, they can be brought inside and will finish ripening.
