Cucumis melo
Minimum seed count: 20
This sweet little melon was released here in New Hampshire in 1966 by Professor Elwyn Meader of the University of New Hampshire. Elwyn was a botanist and plant scientist who developed over 50 new strains of fruits and vegetables in his lifetime. He never accepted royalties for his varieties, but instead gave them away "as payment for his space on the planet".
The name "Granite" doesn't refer to a rock-hard melon, but is a play on the nickname of New Hampshire: The Granite State. Fruits grow to 2-3 pounds and are sweet and flavorful. An excellent variety for short seasons and cooler climates. Fruits do not last long in storge, so eat them as they ripen! 65-80 days.
