Cucurbita pepo

Minimum seed count: 20

The newer, hybrid yellow squash varieties are bred to be straight for easy slicing, but in my opinion they can't compare to the rich, nutty flavor of the Crookneck.  Summers in my childhood meant slices of this squash frying on the pan in a whole lotta butter.  Best picked young, when the skin just begins to become bumpy and is still light yellow.  If you miss some at the end of the season, they become thick skinned and gourd-like, perfect to add to fall decorations.

This is a very old squash, dating back to pre-Columbian times in America.  It's been in the North American commercial seed trade for nearly 200 years!
