Cucurbita pepo

Minimum seed count: 20

This is the pumpkin that had been in cultivation for many generations by Native Americans in the Northeast before New England settlers quickly adopted it as a major food source for people as well as livestock.  Fruit can weigh up to 20 lbs.  Although the Connecticut Field Pumpkin has been eaten in in pies, breads and other dishes for hundreds of years or more, today it's stringier and less sweet flesh has fallen out of culinary favor, and it's mostly grown for fall decorations and Jack-O-Lanterns and animal fodder.
