Papaver somniferum
Minimum seed count:
An heirloom from the village of Ziar, Slovakia, this culinary poppy has closed vents on the seedhead, keeping the seeds from spilling out before harvest. Seeds are slow to germinate and like cool soil temps.
If you have saved your seeds and have plenty, it may be worth direct seeding them in the garden by scattering the seeds in the soil surface, however due to the delicate nature of the seedlings and the fact that they are delicious to slugs and insects, only a small percentage are likely to become established. Poppies can be started indoors about six weeks before the last frost date and transplanted out once large and sturdy enough. They don't love to be transplanted but will tolerate it if roots are minimally disturbed and they are kept well-watered. Once you have grown and collected plenty of seed, it can be scattered in spring or fall each year, and you will have an established poppy-patch!
Flowers are beautiful and seedpods are also decorative fresh or dried in bouquets.
Delicious and unusually sweet poppy seeds!
