Pole Bean
Also known as Amish Knuttle. Said to have arrived in America on the Mayflower in 1620. While this is possible, since early explorers had brought beans to Europe and they were already widely grown there, it's equally possible that it was a Native American variety shared with the Pilgrims, We will probably never know its true origin, but at least we still have this historic red-speckled bean. Can be used as snap beans when young, or left to mature for dry beans. Earthy flavor and firm texture.
Mayflower is a 'cut-short' type, which means the beans are blocky and squared off, fitting tightly together in the pod.
