Phaseolus vulgaris
Minimum seed count: 20
Pole Bean
This is the historic bean carried by the Cherokee on their forced march from their Smoky Mountain homeland to Oklahoma in the 1830's. The seeds were shared with Seed Savers Exchange by Dr. John Wyche, whose ancestors were some of the people who carried this bean on the Trail of Tears, so that today this variety thrives in gardens all over the country
Can be eaten either as a greenish purple snap bean, or left to mature into a shiny black dry bean, which is excellent in soups and stews. Prolific and vigorous.
